The Waffle and Panel is the second module from the Digital Design project series. This project explores the generation of a waffle structure to produce a structural system that will be used to support a pavilion design. Panellings are also utilised to investigate possible ways to articulate the exterior / cladding of the structure. This systematic process is done through the introduction of Grasshopper: an algorithmic generative tool from Rhino 3D. Grasshopper is particularly effective for this design exercise as it allows multiple designs to be rapidly iterated, providing an efficient timeline for investigating multiple potential of forms which can be speculated as habitable space of a pavilion.

Task 2: Boolean commands

For Task 2: Boolean Geometries, the concept of porosity is introduced. Through the solid-void relationship, I was prompted to start considering concepts of thresholds - spaces for programmes, as well as circulations about the spaces.  In this project, I utilised perfect spheres with varying sizes as the main boolean carving objects. Spheres are chosen due to its curvaceous profile that leaves a smooth , non-angular cuts. The whole distribution of the spheres is generated to create an overhead light-well where skylights are filtered into the interior spaces through a telescopic system. This again plays with the idea of utilising lights where in this case; lights are being used to signify important thresholds.
